Gérard Courant a confectionné six « petits » films (trois en version arabe et trois en version anglaise), tous intitulés Samawah, Year Zero, en compléments à la journée de séminaire qu’un groupe de cinéphiles de Samawa, en Irak, a consacré à son oeuvre cinématographique.
Chaque film est réalisé à partir d’un Cinématon du cinéaste. Gérard Courant a utilisé deux portraits de sa célèbre série : le premier, hors collection, filmé par le cinéaste lui-même en 2001 qui s’appelle Cinématé ! et le second, hors série lui aussi, filmé à Milan (Italie) en 2014 par Roberta Gialotti.
Dans ces Samawah, Year Zero (Samawah avec un « h », qui est l’orthographe du nom de la ville en anglais) Gérard Courant a imprimé sur les images de ses Cinématons des textes courts, en anglais ou en arabe, réalisés à partir de titres de films (de Roberto Rossellini, Julien Duvivier, Dino Risi, Douglas Sirk, Christian-Jaque ou Jean-Luc Godard) qu’il a légèrement modifiés pour la circonstance et qui célèbrent la ville de Samawa.
Dans Samawah, Year Zero III (version anglaise), Gérard Courant a mélangé en les surimpressionnant les images du Cinématon de son film Cinématé ! avec les images du Cinématon de Roberta Gialotti et, sur ces images, a inscrit en anglais une dizaine de courts textes conçus à partir de titres de films.

A fusion of two Cinématons to celebrate the day of experimental cinema in Samawah, Iraq.
If you're patrician you might be familiar with those iceberg memes that rank music/movies etc on their accessibility and/or supposed depth. Well, on this iceberg meme from 4Chan's /tv/, Courant is listed at the very bottom of the graph, denoting him the least accessible filmmaker of them all (surely subjective).
With French filmmaker Gérard Courant I assume I found the right Courant, as this guy has done some very weird experimental films (including one of the longest of all time). This short in particular is simply two Cinématons (Courant's silent vignettes of people - generally celebrities - doing random things) layered over each other, with their different colors creating a 3D glasses-esque effect.
As the description says, it's a "fusion of two Cinématons to celebrate the day of experimental cinema in Samawah, Iraq". That's about all the meaning I can get from it, though surely there's a purpose to the vague text on the screen. Funnily enough I recognize the font of that text, so I wouldn't be surprised if he did this on Final Cut Pro, the editing software I use. Tbh [self-plug] this looks very much like some of the memey experimental stuff I've made while messing around with the color correction and opacity settings on there. The tribal-sounding music has a haunting effect, I'll give it that.
